The SUW Treasure Hunt
The SUW has a rather clever and interesting Treasure Hunt along it that most people don't know about. At various locations along the route coins have been hidden in secret locations that you have to try and find and collect. I enjoyed this hunt when I walked the SUW in July 2018 as it was something different to other long distance walks and didn't add much time to your walk, there was usually only one to be found each day.
Ultreia - your search begins now
As you walk along the SUW, look at the waymarkers and you might see a metal badge fixed to it which says "Ultreia". This means that there is a Kist located nearby, so keep your eyes open for anything unusual. It could be a few feet away but then again it could be a few hundred metres along the path. The Kist is usually found near the path and some are easier than others to spot than others especially in woodland or when the ferns are high.
What are Kists?
A Kist is an individually sculptured container hidden a few paces from the path and inside the container can be found Waymerks. There are 13 of them along the SUW so keep your eyes open and look for something that might look out of place near the path. If you reach the next waymarker and haven't spotted a Kist then it means that you have passed it, so you can either continue your walk or go back and have a closer look for it.
What are Waymerks
Waymerks are the metal coins that can be found in a Kist, each Kist has it's own different Waymerk and there are 13 to find and collect. These were placed in the Kists a few years ago but there were still plenty in each of the Kists that I found in July 2018 so I don't know if some get added every year or the ones in the Kists have been there all the time. The Kists can be open to the elements so some of the Waymerks might be rusty so try and pick a few out of the Kist, choose the cleanest one and put the rest back, closing the Kist after you.
